If you dig a small pond in your land, after a few months it usually fills up with rainwater. Along with rainwater, if there is any connection with nearby canals, swamps, drains, or rivers (such as through flooding, overflow, or water flow during the rainy season), tiny fish eggs, fry, or fingerlings may enter the pond.
1. Through rainwater flow – fish eggs or small fry are carried in with the water.
2. During flooding – when nearby canals or wetlands overflow, fish move into the pond.
3. By birds – sometimes fish eggs stick to the feet or feathers of water birds and get carried into the pond.
4. By humans – when people add water from nearby sources, small fish fry may accidentally enter.
However, not all kinds of fish come this way. Usually, small species (such as punti, magur [catfish], shing, taki, shrimps, etc.) appear first. Larger fish generally need to be released into the pond for cultivation.
